Track and Field Star Neugebauer Looks Ahead to Olympics, Learns from World Champs Mishaps
German decathlon ace Leo Neugebauer reflects on his World Championship decathlon run, which fell short of Olympic glory. "I've spent a lot of time contemplating how everything went. Of course, I can't be unhappy with the season overall because I've achieved many great things. I wanted that medal at the World Championships – that would have been a fantastic finish to the season," the 23-year-old decathlete shared with Sport1.
Hailing from VfB Stuttgart, Neugebauer has moved there from his former club LG Leinfelden-Echterdingen. He also studies economics in the US at the athletically-prolific University of Texas in Austin on a full scholarship. Despite finishing fifth at the World Championships, the pressures were mounting, as he led at the halfway mark. He remarked, "I've never experienced as much pressure as I did at the World Championships. It was due to the high expectations that stemmed from being named the best athlete of the year. I believe I handled it quite well, though."
The second day of the competition was chaotic, but Neugebauer stressed that he learned plenty from the experience. "I think I coped with the pressure fairly well, though I've had some taste of what it feels like to handle such high expectations now, which could be beneficial for the Olympics."
Neugebauer believes the 9,000-point mark in decathlon is within reach. "It's definitely possible. If you add up all my best scores, you're already well over 9,000 points. However, you can't expect to consistently achieve your best performance.”
Never one to shy away from improvement opportunities, Neugebauer seeks to build on his World Championship lessons for the upcoming Olympic Games. "I'm looking forward to improving in various aspects of the decathlon. The valuable experiences from the World Championships, especially the mistakes made during the second day, will help me in future competitions.
