Disney and Pixar's latest animated film, Elio, is now available for viewers to immerse themselves in on digital platforms. This heartfelt sci-fi adventure offers a unique blend of alienation, family drama, social isolation, and belonging, set against a backdrop of intergalactic adventure.
At its core, Elio revolves around Elio Solís, an eleven-year-old boy who feels "alien" and lonely after losing his parents and being misunderstood by those around him. The film's protagonist embarks on a journey that mirrors his inner struggles, as he is mistakenly taken as Earth's intergalactic ambassador and must navigate an interplanetary crisis.
The film emphasises family dynamics and reconciliation, notably through Elio’s strained relationship with his Air Force Major aunt Olga, and the antagonist Lord Grigon's troubled relationship with his own son. These complex relationships serve to highlight how distance and disappointment can affect families.
Elio also carries an inspirational message about finding one’s place and appreciation of the world. As Elio’s journey evolves, he learns to recognise the goodness and connections around him, resonating with both children and adults.
Stylistically, the film leverages Pixar's innovation with virtual anamorphic lenses and new lighting tools to create the expansive "Communiverse," a visually immersive sci-fi universe. The production also features a musical score by Rob Simonsen, and voice performances by Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, and Brad Garrett among others.
In an interview, Yonas Kibreab, who plays the titular character Elio, expressed his admiration for the Pixar animators' world-building skills. He also found the animation in Elio inspiring and wants to improve his drawing skills.
