Rookie QB Jaxson Dart Shines in Giants' Preseason Opener

The New York Giants' quarterback competition behind starter Russell Wilson took an interesting turn in Week 1 of the 2025 preseason, as rookie Jaxson Dart delivered a standout performance against the Buffalo Bills.

Dart, listed as the third-string quarterback (QB3) on the Giants' depth chart, showcased his potential with a solid outing. He completed 12 out of 19 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, leading the team in rushing with 24 yards on three carries.

His touchdown pass, a 29-yard strike to Lil'Jordan Humphrey down the left sideline, was a key factor in the Giants' 34-25 victory. Despite facing pressure from Buffalo pass-rusher TJ Sanders, Dart remained calm and collected in the pocket, delivering a perfect pass that landed in Humphrey's basket in stride as he fell into the end zone.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll praised Dart's performance, expressing confidence in the rookie and stating that he has improved since joining the team. Daboll also enjoyed working with Dart, noting his demeanor on the sideline and his ability to see the game well.

Dart, a 22-year-old who was traded to the Giants and selected at No. 25 overall in April's draft, spoke about the pressure of the situation and being able to get the ball off before being hit by Sanders. He aims to "stack these" (reps) to become more comfortable as he gains more experience.

Jameis Winston, the Giants' backup quarterback (QB2), also played in the preseason opener, completing 7 out of 11 passes for 62 yards and a score. The competition between Dart and Winston for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Russell Wilson is expected to continue throughout the preseason.

The Giants' organization views Dart's current positioning as "part of the process" to give the rookie a chance to develop and potentially move up during the season. Some speculate that he could take over if things do not go well with the starters.

Daboll stated that Dart still has a long way to go but that he is glad he is on the team. With his impressive performance in the preseason opener, Dart has certainly made a strong case for himself as a potential future star for the New York Giants.
