Debut of 'Primate': The Initial Major Horror Film in the Year 2026
In the sun-kissed islands of Hawaii, a heartwarming reunion takes place as Lucy, the oldest daughter, returns home with her father (Kotsur) and little sister. The family's tranquil life is about to be disrupted, however, as they are reunited with their pet chimpanzee, Ben.
"Primate", an original horror story directed by Johannes Roberts, had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2025. The film, set to release in January 2026, promises a down-and-dirty, sub-90-minute ride that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
Lucy reconnects with Ben, who appears loving, playful, and communicative. However, their peaceful coexistence is shattered when Ben contracts rabies, causing all hell to break loose in the family home. The once sympathetic chimp transforms into a terrifying monster, wreaking havoc particularly in the pool area.
The kills in "Primate" are exceedingly gross and satisfying, adding to the horror as the family struggles to escape from their own home. The performances in the film fit the story well, with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur delivering a compelling portrayal.
"Primate" is directed by Johannes Roberts, known for his work on "47 Meters Down" and "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City". The movie features some unique moments due to the smart and rabid chimpanzee character, Ben.
While "Primate" may not redefine the horror genre, it is a solid addition to the January release window. With its well-paced runtime and isolated setting, it offers a gripping and gory experience that horror fans are sure to enjoy.
