Death on stage: Leitmayr and Batic investigate at Munich's Residenztheater - Death on stage: Leitmayr and Batic investigate at Munich's Residenztheater
A tragic death on stage marks the penultimate case for Munich detectives Franz Leitmayr and Ivo Batic. Actress Nora Nielsen collapsed during a performance of The Seagull at the Residenztheater, later confirmed as a lethal overdose. The entire investigation unfolds within the theatre and its backstage areas.
The episode, titled Tatort: The Longing, brings the long-running detective duo back to a place with personal ties for one of its stars.
Nora Nielsen’s death occurred mid-performance, shocking the audience and cast alike. Initially thought to be an accident, tests revealed a fatal concentration of tilidine in her blood. A bottle of the drug was later found in her locker, though it bore no fingerprints, raising suspicions of foul play.
Before her death, the actress had behaved unusually, arriving late and hesitating to take the stage. Detectives Leitmayr and Batic turned to Ria Jäger, the wardrobe mistress and Nora’s close friend, hoping she could provide clues. The case holds extra weight for Miroslav Nemec, who plays Batic—he was once a permanent member of the Residenztheater ensemble from 1981 to 1986.
This episode also signals a changing of the guard. After Leitmayr and Batic’s departure in 2026, Chief Detective Nikola Buvak and Assistant Kalli Hammermann will take over investigations. Andreas Beck, the theatre’s current Intendant, has no connection to the plot, according to official sources.
The episode leaves behind a haunting mystery tied to one of Munich’s most prestigious stages. With Nora’s death ruled a deliberate act, the investigation points to hidden tensions within the theatre. The final appearance of Leitmayr and Batic will air next year, closing a chapter for the iconic detective pair.
