Death of Michael Wollenberg: Contributed to Starlight in Harburg's Inner Harbor

Hamburg's Harborside Hero: For over a decade, Michael Wollenberg graced the Binnenhafen area with his culinary brilliance. Known for running the Michelin-starred Marinas on the Schellerdamm, Wollenberg's presence brought a touch of glamour to Harburg. But the winds of change were on the horizon.

Investor Arne Weber brought the world-renowned chef into the limelight of the Binnenhafen. The Marinas, a bistro-style restaurant with a stilted terrace overlooking the harbor's industrial charm, was an instant hit. Wollenberg, dubbed the "best fish chef in the world," truly shone.

However, the spotlight dimmed with the arrival of Wollenberg's next venture, the Island on the Außenalster. Tragedy struck when the Marinas lost its Michelin star, followed by Wollenberg's departure in 2003. Other restaurateurs attempted to recapture the magic, but to no avail.

Wollenberg's death, a result of a car accident with his motorhome in Turkey, sent shockwaves through the culinary community. Rumors swirled that he was headed to Cyprus, where he reportedly owned properties and planned to retire. His partner remained in Hamburg during his final journey.

The accident occurred when Wollenberg, asleep in his motorhome, was hit by a truck. He was rushed to a hospital in Istanbul, but succumbed to his injuries. Wollenberg's spirit continues to live on at the Marinas, now under new management who are planning extensive interior renovations while preserving the bar area, a nod to the restaurant's storied past.

Today, Wollenberg is revered as a local gastronomic legend, a beacon in Harburg's Binnenhafen who left an indelible mark on the area's dining scene. Though his story ended too soon, his memory and culinary genius will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
