Felix Baumgartner, the renowned Austrian extreme athlete known for breaking the sound barrier during a freefall jump from the stratosphere in 2012, has tragically passed away at the age of 56 in a paragliding accident in Italy.

The incident occurred on the Adriatic coast, in the city of Porto Sant'Elpidio, central Italy's eastern coast, near Fermo. According to Italian fire services, Baumgartner lost control of his paraglider for reasons that remain unclear, and he crashed into the side of a swimming pool at a campsite (or hotel), falling onto a woman who was injured.

Reports suggest that Baumgartner may have suffered a cardiac arrest while still in the air, hinting at a possible medical emergency contributing to the crash. A tourist witnessed the accident and immediately alerted emergency services. The incident was confirmed by Italian firefighters and the Austrian Foreign Ministry.

Hours before the accident, Baumgartner had posted an Instagram story with the caption "Too much wind," which might hint at challenging weather conditions at the time of the flight.

Baumgartner was globally famous for his 2012 jump from about 39 kilometers (24 miles) above Earth, during which he became the first person to break the sound barrier in free fall, reaching speeds of 1342.8 km/h (about 843.6 mph). He had been involved in extreme sports since his youth, starting skydiving at age 16 and further honing his skills in the Austrian military. Baumgartner was famously sponsored by Red Bull for many daring projects and stunts.

The mayor of Porto Sant'Elpidio expressed deep sorrow at Baumgartner’s passing, recognizing him as a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight.
