Wildfire Ravages UNESCO Site in Spain, Displaces Hundreds

In the scorching heat of August 2025, a devastating wildfire swept through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Las Médulas in northwestern Spain, causing widespread destruction and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The wildfire, which broke out on August 10–11, consumed much of the area, including the natural monument of Las Médulas, famous for its ancient Roman gold mines and distinctive red cliffs surrounded by oak, chestnut, and wild cherry forests. The fire reduced significant parts of this heritage site to ashes, with Carucedo's mayor describing the situation as "devastating" and the town as being encircled by flames.

Approximately 700 people were displaced due to the wildfires, with local authorities stating that people would not be allowed to return until safety was guaranteed. The wildfires were part of a broader wave of about 30 flames across Castilla y León, with over 8,000 people evacuated in the region alone. Spain had burned more than 46,000 hectares by this time, with the heatwave prolonging and exacerbating fire conditions.

Emergency services used heavy machinery and overnight efforts to contain the fires, although strong winds and highs near 40°C made firefighting difficult. The wildfire damage in Las Médulas is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of cultural heritage sites to climate-driven extreme weather and wildfires.

Meanwhile, neighboring Portugal is battling three large wildfires in the center and north of the country, while police in Albania have arrested more than 20 people in connection with deliberately lit blazes. Spain has experienced a heatwave for the past week, with temperatures nearing 40°C and fueling wildfires.
