"Dealing with Avangard promised to be no walk in the park"

Nikita Nikitin, head coach of Yaroslavl's 'Lokomotiv', bluntly stated during the post-match press conference following their sixth game against 'Avangard' that it would be unwise to expect an effortless match against their opponents.

Pep talk after the sixth game loss against Omsk by Locomotive's head coach Igor Nikitin

On April 21, Locomotive faced a bitter 3-0 defeat against Avangard in Omsk. With the score line knotted at 3-3 in the Gagarin Cup quarterfinals, the deciding seventh match is set to take place in Yaroslavl.

Following the game, Igor Nikitin, the head coach of Locomotive, shared his thoughts at the post-match press conference.

"We couldn't crack Avangard's defense, and we accidentally gifted them two identical goals. We're gearing up for the last leg," Nikitin said, expressing his disappointment.

He further elaborated on the defensive lackluster show, stating, "We were far from well-organized defensively today. Their tight defense and efficient blocking prevented us from getting shots on goal."

Nikitin acknowledged that Avangard played more defensively near the net and didn't allow many scoring opportunities.

"Those initial moments of excitement made us complacent, thinking the goals would just keep coming. In the playoffs, that's a rarity, not a norm. We need to tweak our approach," he added, voicing a serious concern.

Nikitin also admitted that he never anticipated an easy run against Avangard:

"Obviously, we didn't expect it to be a cakewalk against Avangard. It'd be reckless to expect a walk in the park. Hockey changes, but the fundamentals remain the same, so we carry on discussing the same things."

The final game in the series will take place in Yaroslavl on April 23.
