World's most celebrated number sequence causes traders' bewilderment - Dealers find the " universally recognized numerical sequence" distressing
In a thrilling turn of events, a rare reverse glass printing sign advertising the world-famous 4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser was auctioned off for a price exceeding its initial estimate in the heart of Cologne, Germany.
Hosted by Horst Lichter, known for his role in the popular TV show Bares für Rares, the auction witnessed a fierce competition among three traders - Jan Čížek, Daniel Meyer, and Daniel Suppes. The bidding war quickly escalated, with the final price reaching an impressive 1010 euros.
Jan Čížek emerged as the victor, securing the coveted sign for his collection. The sign, featuring the vibrant pop-art colours praised by Daniel Meyer, showcases the iconic Molanus bottle, a design that has remained unchanged since its creation in 1820.
The reverse glass printing sign is believed to have originated from the 1950s or 1960s, adding to its historical value. The number combination "4711" on the sign holds significant importance, as it was originally a house number in Cologne Glockengasse during the French occupation in 1794.
Daniel Suppes, who had expressed interest in the sign, graciously accepted the outcome, stating that the sign should belong in Cologne. Elke Velten-Toennies, another bidder, expressed unease as the price reached 1000 euros.
The seller had initially hoped to receive between 200 and 300 euros, but Sven Deutschmanek, a local expert, estimated the sign to be worth 400 to 600 euros. The reverse glass printing sign will now find its new home in Jan Čížek's apartment, located near Glockengasse.
4711, the fragrance, is deeply rooted in the origins of the "Eau de Cologne" genre, one of the oldest and most iconic perfumes in the world. Launched in 1792, 4711 Original Eau de Cologne is a classic citrus aromatic fragrance that has become synonymous with the city of Cologne and is recognized worldwide as a symbol of the city's historical and cultural heritage.
The number combination "4711" is considered one of the most famous in the world, embodying the city's rich history and continuous influence on the global perfume industry. The auction of the reverse glass printing sign serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of 4711 and its deep connection to the city of Cologne.
Daniel Meyer praised the reverse glass printing sign's vibrant pop-art colors, and this sign, which showcases the iconic Molanus bottle, was auctioned off on social media by Horst Lichter, host of the TV show Bares für Rares. The auction, attended by several traders including Daniel Meyer, Daniel Suppes, and the victor, Jan Čížek, showcased an entertaining bidding war that also included movies-and-tv references throughout the evening.
