Mexico Faces Ongoing Violence: Five Most Violent Cities Revealed

Mexico is grappling with a significant security crisis, as evidenced by the high rates of violence and homicides across the country. Over the weekend of June 20-22, 179 homicides were registered nationwide, only sixteen fewer than on the weekend of June 6-8.

This concerning trend has been highlighted by various reports, including one by Azteca Noticias, which emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of this violence and the need for strengthened security measures. The violence was particularly concentrated in certain states, with Sinaloa reporting 24 homicides, Chihuahua reporting 15, Mexico City reporting 14, and Guanajuato reporting 9.

The sheer number of homicides over such a short period underscores the severity of the ongoing security challenges facing Mexico. The murder rate in Mexico is at its highest level in decades, contrary to President Claudia Sheinbaum's claim that the number of homicides is decreasing.

The list of the five most violent cities in Mexico, as of June 2025, includes:

  1. Culiacán, Sinaloa — Frequently cited as the most unsafe city in Mexico in 2025 according to official urban security surveys.
  2. Celaya, Guanajuato — Known for its extremely high homicide rate of 87 per 100,000 people by 2024, with violence involving massacres and widespread criminal activity.
  3. Tijuana, Baja California — Part of the Baja California state, which the U.S. State Department identifies as a dangerous area due to crime rates in 2025.
  4. Reynosa, Tamaulipas — Marked by increasing gun battles and the use of improvised explosive devices by criminal groups, warranting a "do not travel" warning by the U.S. Embassy.
  5. Acapulco, Guerrero — Located in Guerrero state, which also has a broad "do not travel" warning due to crime and kidnapping risks.

These cities reflect both high homicide rates and ongoing security challenges related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and police effectiveness. Celaya and Culiacán stand out specifically for extremely high homicide rates, while Tijuana, Reynosa, and Acapulco are key crime hotspots highlighted by travel advisories and state-level warnings.

The continuing high rate of killings remains a significant concern for the safety and security of Mexican citizens. Despite President Sheinbaum's claim that Mexico is a "peaceful" country, the current murder rate does not support this assertion. The government, however, is reportedly working to combat the violence, but the ongoing high rate of homicides remains a significant concern.
