Deadly Sky Assault in Kyiv: 31 Victims, Among them 5 Children, Following Nightlong Russian Drone and Missile Bombardment

In a tragic turn of events, Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, was hit by a combined drone and missile strike on 31 July. According to the latest data, at least 31 people, including a six-year-old child, lost their lives in this attack on Ukraine.

The Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA) revised the number of fatalities from two to fourteen, with four found in Sviatoshynskyi district and two in Solomianskyi. Additionally, 159 others were injured in the attack on Ukraine, including nine children.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video showing the impact of a missile hitting a residential building in Kyiv and stated that Russian terrorists were responsible for the strike on Ukraine. Emergency services reported that among the injured were three police officers responding to an emergency call at the time of the strike on Ukraine.

Images released by the State Emergency Service (DSNS) show collapsed structures, burning vehicles, and rescue teams working through the debris. Fires broke out in several non-residential buildings, and widespread structural damage was recorded in multiple locations. Road closures were implemented in affected areas for emergency response operations.

The attack destroyed an entrance section of a residential high-rise in Sviatoshynskyi district. The Russian strike targeted 27 locations across four city districts, using a combination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles.

Local officials have urged residents to remain indoors during alerts and to adhere to civil protection protocols. As of 31 July, Kyiv remains under high alert, with the possibility of further attacks on Ukraine not ruled out.

Ukrainian authorities have reiterated calls to international partners for increased air defence support in the face of persistent Russian strikes targeting urban centres. The institution currently investigating the type of munitions used in Russia's combined attack campaign against Ukrainian cities during the summer of 2025 and the precise sequence of the attacks appears to be Ukrainian Telegram channels tracking drone attack directions and detailed reports, alongside analyses such as those by @ShahedTracker and independent open-source intelligence organizations like the Institute for the Study of International Security (ISIS), though no single official institution is explicitly named as leading this investigation in the available sources.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and clean-up and damage assessment operations are continuing, with municipal services deployed across the affected districts. The latest data provided by Kyiv Mayor Klitschko and KMVA indicate that 52 people were injured overall.

This latest strike is part of an ongoing campaign of attacks on major Ukrainian cities during the summer of 2025. The use of combined drone and missile strikes has become a regular feature of Russian operations. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the injured during this difficult time.
