Deadly shooting incident claims lives in Manhattan office tower
In a shocking turn of events, a mass shooting occurred at an office tower on 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on July 28, 2025. The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura from Nevada, took the lives of at least five individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer.
The building, a bustling hub of some of the country's top financial firms and the National Football League, was the scene of the horrific incident. Emergency crews were called to the office building around 6:30 p.m. for a report of someone shot.
The building, located a short walk north from Grand Central Terminal and about a block east of St. Patrick's Cathedral, was in a busy area of midtown. Local TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads, while some finance workers at an office building down the block were picking up dinner when they heard a loud noise and saw people running.
The suspect was reportedly armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing body armor. He fatally shot himself after opening fire inside the lobby and on the 33rd floor, ultimately killing four people in addition to himself.
Investigations revealed that Shane Tamura was born in Hawaii and grew up in Southern California, where he played high school football at two schools. A note found in his pocket suggested he may have been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, common among athletes like football players. The note also referenced the National Football League (NFL), whose headquarters are in the same building, raising questions about a possible connection or motive.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no official motive has been confirmed yet. The city's emergency management alert system warned of traffic delays, road closures, and disruptions to public transportation in the area. Workers were kept inside the building for about two hours before being told they could leave.
Anna Smith, who joined the workers pouring back into the finance office building, described the scene as "like a crowd panic." Jessica Chen, who was in a presentation on the second floor, heard multiple shots and barricaded herself in a conference room.
In recent years, New York City has seen a significant decline in gun violence. Through late July, the city is on pace to have its fewest murders and fewest people hurt by gunfire than any year in recent decades. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to ensure public safety.
