Deadly shipwreck leaves at least 20 casualties near Lampedusa, Italy
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a shipwreck near the Italian island of Lampedusa has claimed the lives of at least 26 migrants, according to the latest data from August 2025. The incident marks a grim reminder of the dangerous journey many migrants undertake in search of a better life.
The tragedy unfolded when two boats, carrying approximately 95 migrants, sunk off the coast of Tripoli, Libya. The exact number of casualties is still uncertain, with around 8 to 10 individuals reported missing. The details of the shipwreck remain limited, but it is known that the boats were overcrowded and leaky, typical of many vessels used by migrants crossing the central Mediterranean route.
The Italian financial police spotted the overturned boat, but by the time help arrived, it was too late for many. Among the victims were men, women, minors, and even a newborn baby. The news of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl missing in the shipwreck has added to the sorrow of this tragic event.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed the disaster and expressed the urgency of preventing such dangerous sea journeys and combating the trafficking business. He has been vocal about the issue, writing on social media about the need to address the root causes of migration and to ensure the safety of those making the perilous journey.
The hard-right government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been actively working to stem the flow of migrants, having cut deals with North African countries, providing funding and training in exchange for help in this regard.
As of Wednesday, the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) reports at least 20 migrants died after a separate boat overturned in the Mediterranean. This year alone, 675 migrant deaths have been reported on the central Mediterranean route, making it one of the world's deadliest for migrants.
The Italian coastguard rescued 60 survivors from the latest shipwreck and transported them to safety on the island. Despite these efforts, many more migrants are still missing. Save the Children Italy has reported the missing baby girl, adding to the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of migration and to ensure the safety of those making the journey.
