Deadly Justice in Álamo, Veracruz: The Tragic Tale of Irma Hernández
Retired Teacher Murdered in Veracruz: A Tragic Reminder of Extortion and Violence
In the small town of Álamo Temapache, Veracruz, a 62-year-old retired schoolteacher named Irma Hernández Cruz became a victim of organized crime. Hernández, who took up driving a taxi to make ends meet, was kidnapped on July 18, 2025, near a taxi stand in the town center.
Six days later, her body was discovered in a rural area between Álamo and Cerro Azul. A chilling video surfaced, showing Hernández delivering a coerced message to fellow taxi drivers. The video underscored the growing threat of extortion and violence faced by public transport workers in the region.
The Veracruz Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into Hernández's murder, with several suspects arrested, including José Ramón “N”, who has been charged for aggravated kidnapping. Despite this, the absence of commentary from top officials, such as Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle and President Claudia Sheinbaum, has fueled frustration and fear among citizens. Critics argue that their lack of response reflects a troubling indifference to the escalating violence and impunity in the state.
Following Hernández's tragic death, civil organizations and local residents have demanded justice and stronger protections for vulnerable workers, especially women, in high-risk professions. They call for more effective action and preventive measures from high-level authorities to tackle the escalating violence and organized crime impact.
As the judicial process continues, the murder of Irma Hernández Cruz serves as a stark reminder of the grave dangers public transport workers face in Veracruz from organized criminal groups. The case underscores the urgent need for stronger governmental responses to curb extortion-driven violence against vulnerable workers in the region.
