Deadly Incidents Occur During Humanitarian Aid Delivery in Gaza: Key Facts Explained

Facing Food Crisis, Aid Distribution in Gaza Turns Into a Deadly Chaos

In the troubled region of Gaza, a new initiative to deliver food to the starving Palestinians has turned into a tragic mess within merely a few days. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), established with backing from Israel and the US, has been plagued with turmoil, marred by civilians' fatalities while trying to secure aid.

The GHF, a private organization designed to replace UN-led systems for distributing aid in Gaza, has found itself mired in havoc, claiming countless Palestinian lives over the past few days. In a bid to address the hunger crisis caused by a monthslong Israeli blockade, tens of thousands of Palestinians have flocked to GHF's distribution points, hoping to snag one of the scarce packages.

Palestinian authorities and witnesses have accused Israeli forces of shooting dozens of civilians dead near aid sites in Rafah. Over the past three days, the Israeli military said it fired "warning shots" towards alleged suspects approaching military positions. On Saturday, the military admitted that its forces fired towards individuals about a kilometer away from the site, despite denying shooting at civilians "near or within" the distribution site on Sunday.

Despite international condemnation mounting, understanding the events that led to this crisis requires an in-depth look at the food situation in Gaza and the role of the GHF.

The Desperate State of Food in Gaza

The root of the hunger crisis dates back to Israel's halt of all humanitarian aid in early March 2025, claiming a sufficient amount of supplies could not enter Gaza for 11 weeks, pushing its 2.1 million residents deeper into a dire food crisis. A UN-backed report warned in late April that one in five residents was facing starvation, with the entire Gaza Strip teetering on the brink of famine.

To alleviate the crisis, Israel eased its blockade two weeks ago, allowing aid to flow through UN channels as well as the GHF. However, the amount of aid trickling in still falls drastically short of the population's needs, according to Palestinian officials and international aid groups.

Gazans have been struggling with food insecurity since Hamas' attack in October 2023, with Israel severely restricting the amount of aid that can enter the strip. Prior to the attack, Israel and Egypt already imposed a partial blockade on Gaza, making over two-thirds of the population food insecure, according to the UN.

GHF: A Controversial Initiative

The GHF relies on private military contractors for security and aims to replace traditional methods of aid delivery in Gaza employed by humanitarian organizations. Faced with growing international pressure, Israel eased its blockade two weeks ago, enabling the GHF to initiate operations in its stead. However, the situation soon spiraled out of control, leading to an untold number of civilian fatalities.

The GHF has faced internal strife, with its executive director quitting the day before its operations in Gaza began, and the Boston Consulting Group canceling its contract with the organization earlier this week. The foundation has set up four "Secure Distribution Sites" in southern and central Gaza, aiming to feed roughly 1.2 million of Gaza's 2.1 million residents. Despite this effort, the system pales in comparison to the United Nations system, which distributes aid through over 400 points across Gaza.

To mitigate the risks involved in seeking aid, the GHF coordinates with the Israeli military to designate specific routes for Palestinians and issues warnings on Facebook against straying from designated roads. However, it remains unclear how aware Palestinians are of these detailed instructions, nor how close the designated SDS-01 hub comes to Israeli Defense Forces positions.

Over the past three days, Palestinians have apparently approached these positions, leading the IDF to open fire on several occasions. The UN had warned that Israeli military involvement in securing the areas around the sites could potentially deter Palestinians from seeking help, or lead to them facing reprisals.

The UN has refused to participate in the new Gaza aid initiative, citing a violation of some basic humanitarian principles and expressing concern that GHF's system risks encouraging Israel's publicly stated goal of depopulating northern Gaza. Despite this, the GHF has pledged to extend its operations to northern Gaza at a later date, but no such distribution points have yet been established.

In a disquieting turn of events, the number of those dying from hunger-related causes has risen as a direct result of the struggling humanitarian situation in Gaza. The violence and chaos surrounding the aid distribution system have only exacerbated this unfortunate situation.

  1. The politics of food distribution in Gaza have taken a dramatic turn, as the role of the GHF, a private organization dealing with migration and general news, has been marked by war-and-conflicts and crime-and-justice, with countless civilian fatalities in the past few days.
  2. As Palestinians continue to struggle with food insecurity in the region, the migration of thousands toward the GHF's distribution points heightens the risk of accidents, as civilians approach areas near war-and-conflicts, potentially leading to further casualties.
  3. In the complicated web of international relations, the establishment of the GHF, backed by Israel and the US, raises questions about its influence on the political landscape of Gaza and the broader Middle East, particularly its impact on issues like war-and-conflicts, crime-and-justice, and migration.
