Deadly Head-On Crash on Icy Kazakhstan Highway Kills Two Women
Two women have died in a head-on collision on an icy stretch of road in Kazakhstan’s Pavlodar region. The crash took place on December 27 along the Pavlodar–Omsk highway, near the village of Borovka.
The accident happened when the driver of a Toyota Vitz lost control on black ice and collided with a Hyundai Accent. One woman died immediately at the scene, while the second later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. A passenger from one of the vehicles was also injured and taken to Pavlodar Regional Hospital for treatment.
Local authorities had already been warned about dangerous conditions on the same road. Just two days earlier, users reported black ice in the area, and a GAZelle van skidded into a ditch on December 26. Despite these warnings, the crash occurred, prompting police to launch criminal proceedings. The Pavlodar Region Traffic Police had increased patrols in the week leading up to the accident. Officers conducted road inspections, targeted checks on hazardous sections, and coordinated maintenance with road services. Eight specialised vehicles were also deployed to treat the highways. Both vehicles involved in the collision have now been impounded for investigation.
The incident has raised concerns over road safety in icy conditions. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, while the injured passenger remains under medical care. Police have not yet released further details on the ongoing criminal case.
