Chat-Newz: Venom: The Final Go-Round

Venom: The Last Dance, as helmed by director-scribe Kelly Marcel, is more than just a film—it's the grand denouement of a three-film journey! Snag your popcorn, folks, 'cause it's time for the climactic battle against an extraterrestrial menace.

"It ain't just another flick, it's the finale of an epic voyage," says Marcel. "It's an absolute privilege to wrap up the Venom saga. It's a deeply moving farewell to the Venom trilogy." This movie's gonna tug at your heartstrings, promises Marcel, who co-wrote the last two Venom films and served as producer on both.

Meet up again with Tom Hardy as our antihero, Venom, one of Marvel's most multifaceted characters, as the trilogy reaches its end. Life's a struggle for Eddie Brock (aka Venom) and the symbiote. Fugitives from two worlds, they're cornered, with time running perilously short.

Behind the Scenes

As Marcel moves from production to directing, she's thrilled to carry on her long-standing collaboration with the ever-versatile Hardy. The duo crafted the story for The Last Dance over a week-long creativespot in London. According to Marcel, "Tom and I share a language. He groks my scripts, and I construct characters that he enjoys inhabiting. In crafting The Last Dance, it was heartwarming, if not a wee bit sentimental, to bring the story to the public. I hope we've honored the fans with a befitting send-off for these characters we adore."

Rom-Com with the Extraterrestrial Twist

Marcel cheekily suggests, "The Venom trilogy has turned out to be a classic romantic comedy, in a strange way." Venom and Eddie first connected in the initial film. After hitting a speed bump in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, their relationship is on the rocks. Now, as the story wraps up, they're finally learning to live with each other, finding a new balance in their relationship—but will they be able to keep it going?

Venom: The Last Dancepicks up where the previous film ends, with Eddie and Venom up against the ultimate enemy, Cletus Kasady and his symbiote, Carnage. Y'all might remember that battle from the Grace Cathedral. The exposure of Venom's existence, now a problematic threat both for human authorities on Earth and an intergalactic adversary, creates a nebulous future for the duo.

Directorial Debut

In addition to writing and directing The Last Dance, Marcel is also stepping into the director's chair for the first time. Although she flunked film school, she's been making a name for herself since her TV show, Terra Nova, sparked a bidding war and landed a $60m spot on Twentieth Century Fox. Her filmography includes Saving Mr. Banks, Fifty Shades of Grey, and the two Venom films. In 2023, she adapted Victor Lavelle's novel, The Changeling, into an eight-part series for Apple TV+. Her collaboration with Melina Matsoukas earned them the 2023 IndieWire Auteur Award.
