Deadly fog on Belarus's M1 highway triggers accident warnings from authorities

Thick fog has created hazardous driving conditions, particularly on the M1 highway in Belarus's Smalyavichy District. Authorities are warning motorists and pedestrians to take extra precautions after multiple accidents were reported in the area. The State Traffic Inspectorate has issued guidelines to reduce risks during low visibility.

Poor visibility and misjudged distances are the main causes of collisions in fog. Drivers are advised to slow down, matching their speed to how far they can see ahead. Sudden lane changes and hard braking should be avoided to prevent chain-reaction crashes.

Low-beam headlights and fog lights must be used when necessary, as high beams reflect off the fog and make visibility worse. If driving becomes unsafe, motorists should pull completely off the road, turn on hazard lights, and wait until conditions improve. Keeping a greater distance from the vehicle in front is also critical.

Pedestrians face risks in foggy weather too. They are urged to stay alert, avoid distractions like phones, and wear reflective clothing or accessories. While no pedestrian incidents linked to fog have been recorded in Smalyavichy District over the past year, authorities stress that vigilance remains essential.

The M1 highway has seen several fog-related accidents recently. Traffic officials are monitoring the situation and reminding all road users to follow safety rules strictly.

The State Traffic Inspectorate continues to urge caution for everyone on the roads during fog. Drivers must adjust their behaviour to the conditions, while pedestrians should take steps to stay visible. Following these measures can help prevent accidents in areas like the M1 highway.
