Northeast India Battles Monsoon Misery

Sadly, the loss of life extends to the military, with the deaths of three army personnel in Sikkim on Monday due to a landslide.

Sikkim Landslide Claims Army Lives

In Sikkim, a landslide struck a military camp at Chhaten, killing three army personnel and leaving six missing. The disaster occurred on Sunday evening near Lachen town, and was triggered by heavy rainfall in the area.

Recovery operations are underway, with four individuals rescued with minor injuries. More than a thousand tourists across Sikkim are being evacuated as a result of the incident.

Assam Floods Continue to Ravage the State

Assam continues to experience heavy rains, leading to the deaths of at least 10 people so far this season. The flood situation remains critical, with many areas seeing further water level rises.

The regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued warnings for additional moderate rainfall across most of Assam, with heavy rainfall anticipated at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Mizoram Braces for Rain and Landslides

Due to the threat of rain and potential landslides, all schools in Mizoram's Aizawl district were closed on Monday for student safety. Aizawl Deputy Commissioner ET Lalrempuia made the decision following reviews of the weather warnings from the India Meteorological Department and consultations with disaster management officials.

Delhi Under Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

Delhi has issued a yellow alert for possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days. Residents can expect generally cloudy skies with light rain or thunderstorm activity. On Monday, the maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 36.1 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees below the season's average, while the minimum was recorded at 22.6 degrees Celsius, 4.3 notches below normal.

Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operation in Arunachal Pradesh

The Indian Air Force executed a lifesaving Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operation early Monday morning, rescuing 14 individuals stranded in the flooded Bomjir River in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley. These individuals were isolated due to severe flooding and were airlifted to safety with an IAF Mi-17 helicopter.

Rajasthan Braces for New Western Disturbance

IMD scientist Radheshyam Sharma reported on Sunday that a new western disturbance would be active over Rajasthan from June 2 to June 4. The disturbance is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall, along with moderate thunderstorms, at isolated places in Kota, Udaipur, and Bharatpur divisions.

Monsoon Brings Widespread Rain Across South India

Monsoon has made its way to South India and parts of Maharashtra, bringing heavy rainfall to several regions. On Monday, the IMD announced predicting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Kerala & Mahe, interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana etc.

Red Alerts Issued Across Karnataka

Intense rainfall is expected across Karnataka over the next three days, with red alerts declared in six districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru. Orange alerts have been put in place for Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, and Bidar, while yellow alerts cover Bagalkote, Yadgir, Haveri, Gadag, and Hassan districts. Residents are advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions.
