Deadly bus accident in Afghanistan leaves over 50 people deceased
Deadly Bus Collision in Herat, Afghanistan
A tragic road accident occurred near the city of Herat in the district of Guzara, claiming the lives of several individuals. According to reports, a bus was involved in a collision with a truck and a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of multiple passengers from both vehicles.
This latest incident is yet another reminder of the frequent and deadly road accidents that plague Afghanistan, particularly those involving buses. In a single week in 2025, approximately 100 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, with several incidents involving passenger buses leading to mass casualties.
Sadly, 2025 has seen its share of major bus crashes, each resulting in a significant loss of life. In August, a passenger bus fire in Herat claimed the lives of 79 people, mostly Afghan migrants returning from Iran. The bus collided with a motorcycle and a fuel truck, causing a fire. Overcrowding, high speed, and driver negligence were noted causes. Another bus accident in Kabul killed 25 people, while previous bus collisions in late 2024 claimed at least 52 lives.
The high incidence of road accidents in Afghanistan can be attributed to several contributing factors. Poor road conditions, dangerous driving behavior, weak regulation and enforcement, overcrowded and poorly maintained buses, and long and challenging routes with few rest stops all play a role.
The Taliban are urged to take action to restore the Rule of Law and respect human rights, particularly in the area of road safety. The tragic incident in Herat serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved infrastructure, stricter adherence to traffic laws, and increased regulation and enforcement to protect the lives of the people of Afghanistan.
