Winter storm in the northwest causes numerous accidents - Deadly black ice triggers dozens of crashes in northwest Germany

Northwest Germany faced travel chaos after the season’s first snowfall caused dozens of accidents. Icy roads led to a severe collision in the Emsland region, leaving one person seriously injured. Authorities warned of ongoing black ice risks despite rising temperatures.

The worst incident occurred in Papenburg, where a major crash left one person with serious injuries. Nearby, a truck skidded and jackknifed on the A1 motorway, blocking Hamburg-bound lanes for hours. Emergency services dealt with 42 weather-related crashes across Cuxhaven, Jever, and Diepholz.

The sudden winter weather disrupted travel across the region, with icy conditions blamed for the majority of incidents. While temperatures are rising, officials continue to monitor roads for black ice. The injured individual from the Papenburg collision remains under medical care.
