Fatal Accident on A11 in Fog and Darkness - Deadly A11 motorway crash in thick fog leaves one dead and two injured

A fatal crash on the A11 motorway near Penkun in Western Pomerania-Greifswald left one person dead and two injured. The collision, caused by thick fog, involved a van, a truck and a car. Authorities closed the road toward Poland for more than five hours while investigations took place.

The accident happened early in the morning when poor visibility led to a chain reaction. A van struck the back of a truck, and a car then hit the trailer. The van's passenger suffered severe injuries and later died in hospital.

Two others were hurt in the crash—one seriously, the other with minor wounds. An accident investigator was called to examine the scene. The entire stretch of the A11 toward the Polish border remained shut until midday.

Last year saw no prolonged closures on this section of the A11 due to similar incidents or weather. Short-term restrictions from roadworks had lasted only a few days at most.

The A11 has since reopened, but the crash serves as a reminder of the risks posed by dense fog. Emergency services and investigators worked for hours to clear the site and gather evidence. The deceased's identity has not yet been released.
