MLB Trade Deadline 2025: Pitching Dominates as Teams Shuffle Rosters

The 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline saw a flurry of activity, with a notable emphasis on pitching acquisitions and a scarcity of high-impact position player rentals.

In one of the most significant trades, the Colorado Rockies dealt third baseman Ryan McMahon, along with relievers Kinley and Jake Bird, to the New York Yankees. The Rockies received a package led by second baseman Roc Riggio (#63) and pitcher Griffin Herring (#140). The Yankees, on the other hand, parted ways with outfielder Call, pitchers Soroka, Andrew Chafin, Luis Garcia, and Kyle Finnegan, with pitcher Linan (#11) being the best prospect acquired.

The San Francisco Giants also made a splash, trading outfielder Mike Yastrzemski and relievers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval for MLB reliever Jose Butto, pitcher Blade Tidwell (#141), and catcher Jesus Rodriguez (#167).

The Arizona Diamondbacks, who have had a disappointing season, traded their walk-year contributors. Slugging third baseman Eugenio Suárez was sent to the Seattle Mariners, while starting pitcher Merrill Kelly went to the Texas Rangers. Despite their efforts, Zac Gallen could not be traded.

The Atlanta Braves made minor acquisitions, such as RHP Dane Dunning from the Rangers for RHP José Ruiz, but struggled to move pending free agents like Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias.

The Toronto Blue Jays traded a Top 100 prospect to the Cleveland Guardians for starting pitcher Shane Bieber, while the Rangers acquired Merrill Kelly via a package of promising pitching prospects. The New York Mets bolstered their bullpen for a playoff push by acquiring relievers Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley in exchange for several prospects.

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired catcher Hunter Feduccia from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Ben Rortvedt, reliever Paul Gervase, and lefty prospect Adam Serwinowski.

A surprising highlight was the Houston Astros bringing back former star Carlos Correa, while the San Diego Padres acquired closer Mason Miller from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for top international signing Leo De Vries.

The Miami Marlins traded outfielder Jesus Sanchez, receiving MLB starter Ryan Gusto, shortstop Chase Jaworsky (#256), and outfielder Esmil Valencia (#283) in return. The St. Louis Cardinals traded away pitchers Fedde, Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton, receiving prospects Mason Molina (#41), Blaze Jordan (#43), and Jesus Baez (#111) in return.

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded third baseman Hayes, starter Bailey Falter, and relievers David Bednar and Caleb Ferguson, receiving six players on midseason lists, but none ranked very highly. The Arizona Diamondbacks dealt first baseman Josh Naylor, third baseman Eugenio Suarez, outfielder Randal Grichuk, and pitchers Montgomery, Miller, and Merrill Kelly, receiving P Mitch Bratt (#4) and P Ashton Izzi (#99) as the only acquired prospects appearing on midseason lists.

Overall, trading teams focused heavily on adding starting and relief pitching, with fewer impact position players moved compared to prior years. Prospects were the common currency, especially for acquiring frontline pitchers to bolster playoff rotations. About 50 trades took place in the final 31 hours before the deadline, underscoring a highly active market despite no blockbuster bat trade akin to past years.

In the MLB Trade Deadline 2025, the San Diego Padres acquired closer Mason Miller from the Oakland Athletics, while the New York Mets bolstered their bullpen with relievers Tyler Rogers and Ryan Helsley in exchange for several prospects, including Ryans Helsley in baseball's sports arena. The Arizona Diamondbacks, seeking to bolster their pitching, traded starting pitcher Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies for top prospect Ke'Bryan Hayes, contributing to the emphasis on pitching acquisitions.
