Dead Spouse in Barrel: Individual Admits to Spousal Homicide

In the trial of a woman found lifeless in a rain barrel, the accused husband conceded in court at the Regional Court of Trier. The incident reportedly occurred last October when he claimed to have stabbed his wife to death and placed her body inside the empty water barrel in their apartment. He asserted that his wife, suffering from a long-term mental illness, had asked him to end her life.

The man initially assisted his wife into the barrel, he stated. Upon stabbing her in the upper torso, they proceeded to drink whiskey together. A grave light and a cross were placed on the barrel as a tribute. Crushed, the defendant admitted his wife, who had made frequent suicide attempts due to her mental illness, had accused him of not allowing her to die.

The man faces charges of manslaughter. According to the indictment, after taking his wife's life, he kept her body in the 200-liter container for weeks within the apartment, sealing it with foil and tape as the odor grew strong. The room where the barrel was located was also later taped off.

Victim Struggling with Psychological Issues

Although stressing a "tragic constellation," Chief Prosecutor Eric Samel acknowledged that no explicit killing intent seemed to exist from the victim at the time of the crime. The crime is believed to have taken place in mid-October 2024, with the defendant self-reporting to the authorities at the beginning of December.

The victim was dangerously underweight at the time of her death. According to the indictment, she spent her final days confined to the apartment's couch, showing no inclination to leave. Court records indicate she suffered from an anxiety disorder and was prescribed potent psychotropic medications. The autopsy revealed that she succumbed to blood loss and suffocation combined with an overdose of psychotropic drugs.
