DDR Museum to Premiere 'Construction Site of Unity' Doc on Oct 1
On October 1, 2025, the DDR Museum will host a special event: the premiere of the documentary film 'Construction Site of Unity'. This film delves into the history and ongoing saga of the Unity Monument, a symbol that has long been a work in progress.
The documentary is a collaboration between filmmakers Dietmar Ratsch and Jens Becker. They have traced the monument's development from its inception by architects Milla & Partner. Currently, only the base of the Unity Monument stands, with its central component stored in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The project's progress has been hindered by a series of setbacks. Delays, insolvencies, and permit disputes have plagued the construction. The total cost has already surpassed 17 million euros. The Freedom and Unity Monument in front of the Humboldt Forum has become a symbol of these unfinished projects, with its own history of delays and disputes.
Despite these challenges, the Unity Monument is expected to be completed by 2026. The DDR Museum's film premiere on October 1 will serve as a commemoration of the monument's tumultuous history, offering a glimpse into its future completion as visualized.
