DC University Introduces Powerful Characters to Join Superman and Supergirl, Yet James Gunn Discloses a Superhero Currently Excluded from Their Circle
In the ever-evolving world of the DC Universe (DCU), the status of Green Arrow remains a mystery. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and creator of the popular HBO Max series, Peacemaker, has left the character's place in the new DCU continuity in a state of ambiguity.
While Peacemaker Season 1, which is available on HBO Max for a subscription starting from $9.99 a month, carries over many elements from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), some aspects, such as the Justice League cameo in the Season 1 finale, are no longer considered canon in the current DCU.
Regarding Green Arrow, Gunn has stated that the character is a "maybe"—he might exist or might not—and currently, Green Arrow is not recognized as part of the DCU’s “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” phase that he and Peter Safran are constructing.
The ambiguity surrounding Green Arrow's place in the new DCU was further emphasized in the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn, where Gunn stated that he does not know and is not willing to say whether Green Arrow is part of the new DCU canon at this time.
This uncertainty extends to Green Arrow's mentions in the series. In the "It's Cow or Never" episode of Peacemaker Season 1, John Cena's character, Christopher Smith, made a derogatory comment about Green Arrow. Stephen Amell, who plays Green Arrow in the Arrow series, did not appreciate the comment, and Steve Agee's character, John Economos, also mentioned that he had heard the derogatory rumor about Green Arrow.
As Peacemaker Season 2 is set to premiere in the 2025 TV schedule, fans will eagerly await clarification on Green Arrow's role in the DCU. However, Gunn has not definitively confirmed whether Green Arrow’s appearance or reference in Peacemaker Season 1 is canon within the new DCU.
It is recommended to watch Superman before the start of Peacemaker Season 2, as the new season takes place a month after the events of Superman. The DC Universe has incorporated Peacemaker into its franchise, and the series continues to be a captivating addition to the DCU's ever-expanding universe.
