In the heart of America's capital, Washington, D.C., a multi-faceted approach to crime and homelessness has been implemented by the Trump administration. This strategy, criticised for its perceived harshness, focuses on public safety, law enforcement, and institutional care.

Clearing Homeless Encampments

Executive orders signed by President Trump have directed the immediate removal of homeless encampments and graffiti on federal lands in the capital. The aim is to make the city "safer and more beautiful" by relocating homeless individuals away from the city and threatening prosecution for non-compliance.

Long-term Institutional Solutions

The administration believes that shifting homeless individuals, many of whom suffer from addiction or mental health disorders, into long-term institutional care is the most effective and humane way to restore public order and address root causes.

Establishment of Specialized Centers

In May 2025, the National Center for Warrior Independence was established, a facility dedicated to homeless veterans. This centre provides care, benefits, and services to these individuals.

Expanded Federal Policing

Approximately 500 federal law enforcement officers have been deployed in DC as part of a federal operation to combat crime and enforce orders related to homelessness. This deployment has led to hundreds of arrests and firearm seizures.

Funding to Prevent Youth Homelessness

As part of First Lady Melania Trump’s BE BEST Initiative, $1.8 million was invested to prevent homelessness among young people aging out of foster care.

However, this approach has faced criticism for its perceived harshness and the displacement of homeless individuals away from the city.

Meanwhile, the political landscape has been significantly impacted. The crime-focused policies have been seen as a powerful tool by Trump, affecting Hillary Clinton's 2016 primary campaign and Biden's 2020 White House bid. The lack of a strong figurehead in the Democratic party has been cited as a hindrance in competing with Trump's demagoguery.

Trump's claim to be a champion of the law is questioned, as he pardoned 1,600 insurrectionists and violent cop beaters. Critics argue that his crime purge may be mostly for show.

The surge of federal officers and soldiers onto the streets of Washington, D.C. might fill personnel shortages in the police department, but it is likely temporary. The deployment of military vehicles near the Washington Monument symbolises Trump's obsession with military projection and the challenges to US founding values his actions represent.

The defunding of the police by some progressive activists has handed a political weapon to Republicans and alienated many moderates and independents. On the other hand, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore criticised Trump for using the military as a tool for political purposes, suggesting that Trump should emulate methods that have reduced homicides and other violent crimes in Baltimore without militarising the police.

The city of Washington, D.C. has experienced 100 homicides this year. Despite the surge in law enforcement, the White House has no long-term plans beyond window dressing and shows of force, with no specifics on new housing, social services, or long-term care and solutions for homeless people in Washington, D.C.

As the election year approaches, it remains to be seen how these policies will shape the political discourse and impact the lives of the people in Washington, D.C.

  1. The Trump administration's approach to addressing homelessness and crime in Washington, D.C., which includes clearing homeless encampments and increasing federal policing, has been met with criticism for its perceived harshness and lack of comprehensive, long-term solutions.
  2. The political landscape in America has been significantly influenced by Trump's focus on crime and law enforcement, impacting the 2016 primary campaign of Hillary Clinton and the 2020 White House bid of Biden.
  3. The defunding of the police by some progressive activists and the deployment of military personnel by Trump for political purposes have become contentious issues in the discourse on crime and justice, with both approaches raising concerns about public safety and US founding values.
