DC Comics writerExpresses No Remorse After Social Media Posts Linking to Charlie Kirk Result in Cancellation of Batman Spin-off Series
In a surprising turn of events, DC Comics has announced the cancellation of the 'Red Hood' series, following controversial comments made by its writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin. The decision was made after Felker-Martin mocked the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on her Patreon blog.
Felker-Martin, who has written for Time Magazine and published multiple best-selling science-fiction and horror genre books, made a joke about Kirk's death, sparking widespread outrage and backlash. Kirk, a well-known conservative figure, was assassinated on Sept. 10, 2025.
The cancellation affects both existing and future orders of the series. Sellers were invited to return any issues they already received, as the first book in the series had already been shipped by the time the series was canceled.
DC Comics expressed their stance on the matter, affirming the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. However, posts or public comments promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC's standards of conduct. A spokesperson for DC Comics stated, 'We believe in the power of storytelling to bring people together, not to divide them.'
Before the Kirk incident, Felker-Martin's superiors at DC Comics had expressed concern about her outspokenness online. In a conversation with The Comics Journal, Felker-Martin conceded that her comments about Kirk were a moment of poor impulse control, but showed virtually no regret in her first-hand remarks on her Patreon.
In her Patreon response, Felker-Martin wrote about the violent hypocrisy of Kirk and the larger truth of how violence is brought into the world. However, media reports have also exposed Felker-Martin's alleged celebration of the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas massacre.
Images of a poster with Kirk's image and the words 'We stand together' have been seen in London, while memorials honoring Kirk have been held in various locations, including Berlin and London.
As of now, no comment has been received from representatives for Felker-Martin regarding this story. The future of Felker-Martin's career in the comic book industry remains uncertain.
