Battling against woman abuse: Faeser pushes for enhanced safety measures
Amidst numerous incidents of woman abuse, German Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser advocates for increased protection for the affected. She emphasizes the importance of sensitizing law enforcement agencies to recognize warning signs, enabling early intervention to prevent escalations. "Woman abuse is not a private matter, it concerns us all," she stated on International Violence against Women Day, emphasizing everyone's role in stopping the violence.
Further, she highlighted the need to lower inhibitions for those seeking help. One such initiative is a hidden app funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, aiming to directly support women in crisis. In a bid to combat the global surge of woman abuse, Faeser underscores the urgency of immediate intervention in Germany, where a woman is reportedly killed by her partner or ex-partner almost every third day.
According to the United Nations, worldwide woman homicides reached their highest level in 20 years, with around 89,000 cases recorded only for known instances. The actual toll is expected to be substantially higher due to unreported cases.
In 2021, Germany recorded 240,547 victims of domestic violence, marking an 8.5% increase from the previous year. Over 157,550 cases involved partnership violence, with 80% of victims being women.
Joining Faeser in addressing the issue, Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger emphasizes the need to allow women and girls to live free from fear and violence. Various events and demonstrations are planned across German federal states to commemorate the day.
To combat rising global abuse cases, governments should foster protective measures and lower inhibitions for help-seeking by enacting legislative actions, enhancing support services, promoting gender-equitable norms, advocating education and awareness, and adopting preventive approaches.
