David Tennant expresses no malice towards JK Rowling after the Harry Potter writer criticized his stance on the trans debate.
David Tennant on JK Rowling's Trans Views: A Matter of Societal Acceptance
David Tennant, known for his stint as the former Doctor Who, had no qualms voicing his opinions on the transgender issue when pressed. Yet, he seemed less than eager to comment on the controversial figure JK Rowling when asked about her during ITV's The Assembly. The show brings celebrities face-to-face with a diverse group of autistic, neurodivergent, and learning-disabled individuals.
During the show, one panel member, referring to Tennant as a trans "ally," questioned him about the social media backlash he received from Rowling. Initially, Tennant appeared perplexed, stating, "I do miss a lot of this because I'm genuinely not in there."
He eventually noted, "JK Rowling is a brilliant author who's created fantastic stories. I wish her no ill will, but I hope, as a society, we can let people just be. Get out of people's way."
Last year, Tennant found himself in the middle of a political firestorm after suggesting during an acceptance speech at the British LGBT Awards that then Tory Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch should "shut up" and wished she "doesn't exist anymore."
In a later interview, Tennant suggested that the uproar was merely a "minority" issue. He added, "Everyone's so self-obsessed that really, the sort of noise that comes from a certain area of the Press and of the political class is... it's a minority."
Tennant, who played a role in Rowling's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, previously referred to Rowling's critics as "a tiny bunch of little whingers."
In response, Rowling criticized Tennant on Twitter, citing the impact of his comments on rape survivors, female prisoners, and girls and women losing sports opportunities due to male competitors.
The tense moment from the ITV show comes following a slew of accusations against Good Omens co-writer Neil Gaiman, whom Tennant referred to during the episode. Despite unspecified "serious allegations" against a "friend" working on Good Omens, Tennant remained optimistic about the show's future.
During the episode, Tennant also discussed his skincare routine, beliefs about god, and the death of his parents, among other topics.
