David Letterman mistaken for Dick Van Dyke in hilarious farmers’ market mix-up

A recent mix-up at a farmers’ market left David Letterman amused after being mistaken for actor Dick Van Dyke. The former late-night host later joked about the incident on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Meanwhile, an unrelated case in Germany saw a worker accidentally travel 107 km off course due to a navigation error, sparking a brief search effort.

Letterman, now 77, revealed that strangers often fail to recognise him since retiring from The Late Show in 2015. During a recent trip to a farmers’ market, one person even asked if he was Dick Van Dyke, the 98-year-old star of Mary Poppins and Diagnosis: Murder. When Letterman playfully asked the man to guess his actual identity, the stranger got it wrong. He later shared the story on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, adding that he now wears a name tag to avoid confusion.

Letterman’s light-hearted take on fading fame contrasts with the German worker’s accidental detour. Both cases show how small mistakes—whether in recognition or navigation—can lead to unexpected situations. The incidents have since been resolved without lasting consequences.
