The celebrated athletes of the year hail from the realms of biathlon, gymnastics, and basketball. Denise Herrmann-Wick, the esteemed biathlete, was recognized for her impressive World Championship performance in Oberhof, while gymnast Lukas Dauser snatched the gold on the parallel bars in Antwerp. Notably, Germany's basketball team, helmed by the illustrious Dennis Schröder, clinched their first World Championship title and delivered an unforgettable semi-final triumph over the US squad's star ensemble.

The feted athletes graced the red carpet at the 77th edition of the gala, held within the stately Kurhaus in Baden-Baden, surrounded by approximately 700 guests. The people gathered to commemorate the end of the sporting year amid the splendor of the Bénazetsaal, marking the first full-capacity event since the advent of the coronavirus pandemic.

The basketball players experienced a sequence of accolades since their landslide victory in Manila on September 10. Schröder and his star players, including Franz and Moritz Wagner, as well as Daniel Theis, have been in the spotlight. Speaking at the event, Schröder expressed his hopes for increased recognition and admiration for basketball, stating, "Basketball is an amazing sport, and I hope we can earn the respect we deserve for what we've accomplished over the last two years."

Despite their turbulent NBA schedules, Schröder, Franz, and Daniel were unable to attend the gala. In their stead, professionals from the Bundesliga, such as Andreas Obst from FC Bayern, represented the basketball players. The last time German basketball was awarded Team of the Year was in 2005, when their European Championship silver medal triumph overshadowed the ice hockey team's World Championship silver and the field hockey world championship team's podium finish.

Retired biathlete and "Mommy" Denise Herrmann-Wick prepares to embark on a new phase of her life. On the eve of her 35th birthday, she announced that she is expecting her first child in 2024 with her husband Thomas Wick. Herrmann-Wick, known for her determination and late-career successes, won Olympic gold in 2022, following her bronze medal in the cross-country relay team event in Sochi in 2014.

Conquering the heights of personal and professional challenges, gymnast Lukas Dauser mirrored the path of Fabian Hambüchen, who had previously claimed the last German gymnastics World Championship gold in 2016. Dauser's golden triumph in Antwerp marked a turning point in his life and career, emerging triumphantly from both sport and personal lows.
