In an intense clash of cycling titans, Florian Lipowitz, Germany's Tour de France hopeful, came tantalizingly close to snatching the yellow jersey at the grueling Dauphiné race. The 24-year-old sensation stormed through the 17.4km time trial from Charmes-sur-Rhône to Saint-Péray in 21:47 minutes, just 57 seconds behind race winner, Remco Evenepoel. Lipowitz missed the yellow jersey by a mere four seconds.

Yesterday, Lipowitz made significant gains during a breakaway group.

Meanwhile, Tadej Pogačar, the Tour champion, encountered a setback. The Slovenian star lagged 49 seconds behind Evenepoel and a further 28 seconds behind his rival Jonas Vingegaard. With the long Tour de France time trial approaching on July 9 in Caen, over 33km, Pogačar won't be thrilled with these numbers.

Evenepoel seized the yellow jersey from Spanish rider Ivan Romeo, who now trails in third place, nine seconds behind. Vingegaard holds fifth place, 16 seconds behind, while Pogačar languishes in eighth, 38 seconds off the lead. The upcoming mountain stages promise nail-biting excitement.

Evenepoel's victory marked the team's 1000th win, a historic achievement. The Belgian cyclist expressed his delight, stating, "I had a flawless strategy. I'm overjoyed and incredibly proud of the win. This victory is for Patrick (former team manager Lefevere). I'm ahead of where I was last year, I've worked hard."

Vingegaard was content: "Remco is the world's best time trialist. I'm pleased to have gained time on Tadej. It's always better to lead the pack than the rear."

The challenging race concludes on Sunday on the Plateau du Mont-Cenis. The Dauphiné serves as a dress rehearsal for the Tour de France, running from July 5 to 27. The Dauphiné resumes on Thursday with the fifth stage, a 183km ride from Saint-Priest to Mâcon.
