Cycling's Crussenblöm: Lipowitz Falls Short, Evenepoel Triumphs at Dauphine
Cyclist Evenepoel Cheers as Dauphin Narrowly Misses Him - Dauphiné: Lipowitz inches ahead of yellow - Evenepoel applauds
Gears up and let's roll!
German Tour de France hopeful, Florian Lipowitz, put on a fabulous display of cycling prowess yet again at the grueling Dauphine race. The 24-year-old phenom finished a close fifth in the individual time trial, beltin' out 17.4 kilometers from Charmes-sur-Rhône to Saint-Péray in a mind-blowing 21 minutes and 47 seconds - a mere 57 seconds behind winner Remco Evenepoel. With such a tight margin of defeat, Lipowitz missed out on the coveted Yellow Jersey by a measly four seconds. The day prior, he capitalized on a breakaway group, significantly gaining ground.
Tour champ, Tadej Pogacar, faced a setback as the Slovenian superstar was 49 seconds slower than Evenepoel and also 28 seconds behind Lipowitz's biggest rival, Jonas Vingegaard. This might not be music to Pogacar's ears, especially since the Tour de France features a lengthy time trial on July 9 in Caen spanning a demanding 33 kilometers.
Evenepoel, sporting the Yellow Jersey, snatched it from Spaniard Ivan Romeo, now nine seconds behind in third place. Vingegaard is fifth, just 16 seconds behind, while Pogacar trails at eighth, 38 seconds adrift. This sets the stage for exhilarating racing on the upcoming mountain stages.
The 1000th victory for Evenepoel's team
"I nailed the plan. I'm pumped up and proud of this win," Evenepoel chirped, paying tribute to Patrick (former team manager Lefevere). "I'm on a roll, better than last year, and I worked my butt off."
Vingegaard was also smiling: "Evenepoel's the fastest time trialist on the planet. I'm happy to have gained some time on Pogacar. It's always better to lead than to lag."
The challenging race concludes on Sunday on the Plateau du Mont-Cenis, serving as a dry run for the Tour de France from July 5 to 27. The Dauphine race continues on Thursday with the fifth stage, an adrenaline-pumping 183 kilometer trek from Saint-Priest to Mâcon.
