Daughter of Mehbooba Mufti detained at home
In the heart of Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of the region, and her daughter Iltija found themselves under house arrest on Saturday. The move comes as a preventative measure to stop them from visiting the families of recent victims in the Baramulla and Kathua districts, according to reports.
The latest incident of violence occurred on Wednesday evening, when the Army shot dead truck driver Waseem Mir in the Sangrama area of Baramulla. According to the Army, the 'speeding suspicious civil truck' failed to stop despite repeated warnings and accelerated further while crossing a check-post. Allegedly, the vehicle stopped at Sangrama Chowk as a result of shots fired at its tyres.
Tragedy struck earlier this week in the Billawar area of Kathua district, where a 25-year-old Gujjar youth named Din took his life. Din's family alleges that he committed suicide due to torture by the police over his links with separatist militants. A 3.48-minute video showing Din stating that he is ending his life so that 'not anyone else' becomes a victim of torture and humiliation has gone viral.
Iltija Mufti has not been silent in the face of these events. She posted on 'X' that the gates of their home were locked from outside to prevent them from leaving. The post was later reposted by her mother. Iltija lamented that nothing has changed in Kashmir even after elections, and accused that even comforting the families of victims is being criminalized.
In response to these developments, Iltija also intended to visit Sopore in Baramulla district, where Waseem Mir was shot dead, and Kathua to meet Din's family. She tagged Union Home Minister Amit Shah, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in her post, calling for action and accountability.
This is not the first time Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija have faced house arrest. They were last placed under house arrest in Srinagar on Thursday, September 18, 2025. The Army, however, maintains that its 'alert troops' chased the vehicle for over 23 kilometres and subsequently fired shots at the tyres to deflate them, in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
As tensions continue to rise in Kashmir, the Muftis' calls for justice and accountability echo the concerns of many in the region. The future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the people of Kashmir are demanding change.
