One user, YoureKiddingRight99, thought she'd never find herself in this community as her relationship with her husband's mom was generally good. But a simple favor to babysit a friend's child escalated swiftly, leading to a full-blown Child Protective Services (CPS) investigation complete with shocking accusations and a mind-blowing motive.

It's essential to remember that animosity between MIL and DIL isn't the standard

Joining forces for a survey and interviewing more than 1,500 individuals, authors of In-law Relationships: Mothers, Daughters, Fathers, and Sons discovered that only about 15% of MILs and DILs struggled with their relationships. In contrast, over half felt good about their bonds. Despite some differences in perspectives, the book revealed the following:

  • 33% of MILs strongly agreed they were close, compared to 18% of DILs.
  • 42% of MILs strongly admired their daughters-in-law, but only 23% of the younger women reciprocated.
  • 37% of MILs enjoyed spending time together, while 22% of DILs reported the same.
  • 50% of MILs trusted their daughters-in-law, but only 23% of DILs felt the same.

Geoffrey Greif, Ph.D., co-author and a distinguished professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, observed that the primary concern from the daughter-in-law's perspective was interference in the marriage and child-rearing from the mother-in-law [6].

More than half of the daughters-in-law (52%) disagreed or strongly disagreed that they shared the same parenting philosophy as their mothers-in-law [7].

According to the professor, bridging the gap and maintaining connections should be the focus in these situations. He suggests that daughters-in-law should reframe the interference as love, concern, and a wish to be engaged [7].

However, dealing with a mother-in-law who acts against her son's wife to sabotage family plans can be challenging.

Dr. Joshua Coleman, author of Rules of Estrangement: Why Adult Children Cut Ties & How to Heal the Conflict, asserts that grandparents-to-be must understand that parenting decisions belong to the parents [7].

He insists that acting against your child's wife will only create more conflict, distance, and pain, potentially limiting the possibility of future interactions with your child and grandchildren [7].
