Here's the lowdown on the current situation. After the surprising police raid on the Police Union's headquarters in late March, the State Data Protection Officer has kicked off an investigation. According to Tino Melzer, the officer has requested info from the Gera Public Prosecutor's Office and plans to discuss the case in the Interior Committee of the state parliament.

The Police Union, known as the GdP, has been requesting data protection assurances following the raid. Critics have voiced concerns about the investigation tactics of the internal investigators, and these concerns involve allegations of treason and the handling of sensitive data. As part of this investigation, the union's premises were searched, too.

Data Protection Worries Mount

Initially, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Gera secured storage media for evidence examination, backed by a written search warrant. The warrant covered spaces in the GdP building being used by the suspect, along with the accessible electronic storage media.

Shortly after the raid, the GdP suspected two servers were mirrored, with one server allegedly containing a vast array of highly sensitive personal data. The union demanded clarification about data protection at the time.

However, the Public Prosecutor's Office stated last week that the involvement of the State Data Protection Officer wasn't deemed necessary. But now that the officer is investigating, expect some answers soon on whether the union's concerns have any merit.

In such situations, State Data Protection Officer investigations typically focus on ensuring compliance with data protection laws. The investigation would examine data handling practices, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and analyze data into compliance with regulations. Recommendations or sanctions might follow if violations are uncovered. Updates on ongoing investigations may be offered through official announcements, though specifics might remain limited due to ongoing proceedings or legal restrictions.

  • As part of the investigation, the State Data Protection Officer will likely focus on examining data handling practices, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing data to ensure compliance with regulations, potentially leading to recommendations or sanctions if violations are uncovered.
