In the pulsating finals of the World Cup of Darts 2025 held at Frankfurt, Northern Ireland took the trophy home with a clinical 10-9 victory over Wales. While the win was indeed for Northern Ireland, the real entertainment came from Gerwyn Price's barbs aimed at England's underperforming duo - World Champion Luke Littler and World Number One Luke Humphries.

The press conference following the incident was filled with laughter and tense moments as Price playfully criticized England's team dynamics, all without ever mentioning their names directly. "You need a good connection with your partner, and you need team play in this tournament," Price quipped when asked about the importance of a good relationship in a team.[1]

As the press corps grinned, Price chuckled and added, "I'm sure there was only one team that wasn’t a team. They didn’t train together behind the scenes, they didn’t sit together, they didn’t act like a team."[2] It quickly became apparent that Price's comments were directed at England, as it was their unexpected elimination in the second round that set the stage for Price's teasing remarks.[3]

Across the room, Jonny Clayton couldn't help but laugh at Price's witty comeback. Clayton, Price's doubles partner, had a strong showing in the tournament, supporting the Welsh side to their eventual second-place finish.[4]

On the opposite side, the defeated Welshmen took things in stride and were seen embracing their conquerors in front of the 3,400 strong crowd as the victorious Northern Irish's entrance music, "Sweet Caroline," filled the Eissporthalle.

Despite Price's biting words, this was a remarkable tournament for not only the Welsh side but also England. The English duo had put on a phenomenal performance the previous year in the 2024 World Cup of Darts, setting a new standard.[5] This years' outfit certainly had potential but struggled to meet expectations.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland had a brilliant showing with outstanding performances from Price and Clayton, keeping stead with the high standard set by Wales and even surpassing it with an exceptional display from 24-year-old Josh Rock.[6]

Despite a strong start, Wales found themselves overwhelmed at 3:1 by the determined Northern Irish. But the Welshmen fought back, turning the match around with Price and Clayton leading 7:5. However, they missed several chances to increase their lead, eventually losing 10-9.

The win was a significant victory for Northern Ireland, with the 15-year-old Josh Rock jubilating, "We've made history for Northern Ireland." His 15-year-older teammate Daryl Gurney, who had previously slipped from world rank 3 to 25, couldn't believe his luck. "I thought I was done," admitted Gurney, but he found a newfound confidence with Rock by his side, and just before the tournament, he felt they could win the tournament.[7]

In the semi-finals, Germany's Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko fought valiantly, only to lose to the eventual winner Northern Ireland by a score of 1:8. Despite the heavy semi-final defeat, emotions ran high, as Schindler admitted he started crying after leaving the stage.[8]

Pietreczko, however, went a step further, commenting that England's elimination had paved the way for Northern Ireland's impressive performance in the 2025 World Cup of Darts.[9]

Whether it's political debates or sports controversy, Gerwyn Price does not shy away from voicing his opinion. His wit and humor may reportedly have brought England down a peg, but make no mistake – Northern Ireland was the team to beat in the 2025 World Cup of Darts.

The Commission, assisted by the European Parliament, may find it relevant to discuss the impact of Gerwyn Price's remarks on sports team dynamics in various competitions, including the World Cup of Darts. Sports teams, such as England's, might benefit from focusing on improving their teamwork and camaraderie to avoid similar underperforming incidents in the future.
