Darryl Strawberry extends a touching message to Pete Alonso following his record-breaking home run for the Mets

In a historic moment for the New York Mets, first baseman Pete Alonso has shattered the franchise's career home run record, surpassing the legendary Darryl Strawberry.

Alonso achieved this milestone on August 12, 2025, during a game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. In the third inning, he hit a two-run blast off Braves ace Spencer Strider, setting a new Mets home run record with his 253rd career homer. This achievement came just 146 games after Strawberry reached his 252nd homer, a testament to Alonso's consistent power hitting for the Mets.

The record-breaking homer came a few weeks after Alonso tied Strawberry's record in Milwaukee over the weekend. Alonso, who values his in-person, face-to-face relationship with Strawberry, noted his strong relationship with the eight-time All-Star after tying the record.

Strawberry, who now holds the second spot in the Mets' home run record, congratulated Alonso after the record-breaking homer. In a video shared by the Mets' X feed, Strawberry praised Alonso for his hard work, success in New York City, and being a homegrown player.

Alonso, who won the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year Award, has been a consistent power hitter for the Mets since his debut. Highlighted by his rookie season in 2019 when he hit a Mets single-season record of 53 homers, Alonso has continued to impress with strong performances through 2024.

With a month and a half left in the 2025 season, Alonso now has a chance to add on more home runs to his tally. Through 119 games in 2025, Alonso has already set a new record for the Mets with 27 homers.

Alonso's impressive power pace with the Mets has seen him blast at least 30 home runs in each of his first five full seasons, not counting the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. Currently in his seventh year with the Mets, Alonso has solidified his place as one of the greatest power hitters in the franchise's history, sharing the record for the most career home runs with Darryl Strawberry.
