Dark Sign for Kiev's Future

In a significant development, peace talks involving US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are underway, with the aim of resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The discussions, which have been described as "candid and very constructive" by Putin's aide, are focusing on key issues such as prisoner exchanges and humanitarian concerns. Trump recently initiated the talks by reaching out to Putin following meetings with Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, with the intention of setting a meeting location and planning further steps, including a subsequent trilateral meeting with the US president participating.

However, a contentious issue in these negotiations is the potential territorial concessions by Ukraine. Reports suggest that Trump is urging Kiev to agree to such concessions as part of the peace negotiations. Yet, the extent and acceptance of these demands remain uncertain, and it is unclear how they will influence the official Ukrainian position or what concessions might be acceptable to Zelenskyy.

Ukraine is actively engaged in the negotiation process. Zelenskyy's recent presence at the White House meetings alongside European leaders, and his engagement with Trump's initiatives to bring him into direct dialogue with Putin, underscore Ukraine's involvement. Zelenskyy has expressed a willingness to work on practical confidence-building measures such as prisoner and civilian releases, demonstrating Ukraine's constructive engagement in the peace efforts.

Despite these talks, no formal ceasefire or final agreement has been confirmed yet, and the talks are in the early stages with uncertainty about outcomes. The EU Commission has reaffirmed that Europe continues to stand by Ukraine's side and is working together with the US on a peace solution that takes into account the "vital interests" of the country.

Meanwhile, the term "land swap" proposed by Trump is seen as a distortion of reality, as Russia is not willing to give up any state territories. Brutal "cleansing actions" have been carried out in the occupied Ukrainian regions, suggesting what living under Russian rule could mean for millions of Ukrainians currently living under occupation.

The Federal Government has emphasized that Ukraine must be included in any peace solution, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expecting Zelenskyy to be "involved" in the planned summit. However, there is no involvement of Kyiv in the talks in Alaska planned.

The outcome of the negotiations between Trump and Putin remains uncertain, with concerns that the negotiations in Alaska are only about how much Ukrainian territory will fall to Moscow in the event of a peace agreement. For the Ukrainians in the ceded territories, living under Russian rule would not be legally recognized but implied.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has hinted at the possibility of a "de facto" recognition of Russian control over occupied Ukrainian territories, a move that would further complicate the already complex conflict. As the peace talks continue, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a resolution that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and upholds human rights.
