Wednesday Season 2: Classical Music Adds Dark Allure to Gothic Horror-Comedy

The second season of Netflix's hit series "Wednesday" continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of classical music and dark, whimsical themes. The series, which follows the life of the eccentric Wednesday Addams, has returned with a score that seamlessly combines classical compositions by Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, and Prokofiev with 1980s goth rock and pop.

One of the most notable classical pieces in the series is Sergei Prokofiev's "Dance of the Knights" from his Romeo & Juliet ballet suite. This piece, arranged for cello and performed with authenticity, is featured in a key cello solo scene, highlighting the show's dark and edgy tone. Actress Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday, learned to play the cello for the series, although the cello solos in the show are performed by Hungarian cellist Ölveti Mátyás.

In addition to Prokofiev's work, Mozart's compositions are also prominently featured. "Voi che sapete" from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro is used in Episode 2, while the 'Andante di molto' from Symphony No.34 is featured in Episode 4. The latter is played during an art class where Fester takes part, adding a touch of eerie suspense to the scene.

The classical music in Wednesday Season 2 is not just limited to Mozart and Prokofiev. Verdi's "Dies Irae" also appears, and Wagner’s classical works are part of the soundtrack. These instrumental pieces are used to underscore eerie, dramatic, or suspenseful moments, contrasting with occasional modern rock songs and covers that appear elsewhere in the season.

The classical score was composed by Danny Elfman and Chris Bacon, who rejoined for Season 2 with darker, tension-filled motifs that complement the classical interludes. The score adds richness to the series' gothic horror-comedy style and is integral to the thematic and mood setting throughout the series.

The second season also introduces new characters, including Joanna Lumley as Morticia's formidable mother, Grandmama Hester, and Billie Piper as the Academy's new head of music, Isadora Capri, who is also a werewolf. Lady Gaga is due to appear in Part 2 of the second season as a teacher named Rosaline Rotwood.

As the season progresses, viewers are teased with Enid's death and new mysteries, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion. The tango dance in Episode 3 is a homage to the similar dance in "Addams Family Values" (1993), with Morticia and Gomez sharing a romantic tango to "La Cumparsita" by Roberto Alagna.

"Wednesday" Season 2, Part 1, is currently streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 set to be released on September 3, 2025. The series continues to be a must-watch for fans of the dark and macabre, combining classical music and horror in a unique and captivating way.
