Advent Swim at 6.6 Degrees - Daring Swimmers Brave Freezing Waters for Trebur’s Iconic Christmas Tradition
Over 60 brave swimmers plunged into the chilly waters of Trebur’s lake for the town’s annual Christmas swim. The event, now a long-standing tradition, saw participants strip down to swimsuits despite near-freezing temperatures. Spectators gathered in large numbers to watch and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
The tradition began in 1991 when Heinz-Jürgen Groß organised the first Christmas swim in Trebur’s lake. Since then, the event has grown, running for around 15 years with steady participation. This year, the water reached 6.6°C—warmer than the 5°C air outside.
Lifeguard Elke Sparkuhl, a regular participant, called the conditions 'quite pleasant' compared to previous years. Swimmers followed tradition by wearing only swimsuits or bikinis, as wetsuits are discouraged and often met with playful boos from the crowd.
Around 250 people attended the event, though not all took the plunge. Many came to cheer on the swimmers, enjoy hot food and drinks, and soak up the festive spirit by the lakeside.
The Christmas swim in Trebur continues to draw crowds, blending holiday cheer with a test of endurance. With water temperatures slightly milder than in past years, participants and spectators alike celebrated another successful gathering. The event remains a highlight of the local festive calendar.
