Daring river rescue saves dog stranded on Isar ledge in Munich

A dog was rescued from the Isar River in Munich after chasing a pigeon near the Oberföhring weirs. The animal became stranded on a ledge as its owner watched helplessly from the shore. Firefighters, including swiftwater specialists, stepped in to bring the dog safely back to land.

The incident began when the dog ran after a pigeon and fell into the fast-flowing river near the weirs. Its owner could not reach it due to the strong underwater currents, which make swimming in such areas extremely dangerous.

Munich firefighters arrived quickly at the scene. One of the rescuers swam out to the stranded dog and pulled it from the ledge. The operation ended without injuries, and the relieved owner was soon reunited with the pet.

While the city's fire department regularly handles river rescues, large-scale deployments—like the July chemical plant disaster exercise involving over 200 emergency personnel—are rare and unrelated to routine Isar operations.

The dog was returned unharmed after the swiftwater rescue. Authorities continue to warn against swimming or bathing near weirs because of the high risk posed by underwater currents. The incident serves as a reminder of the hazards in fast-flowing rivers, even for animals.
