Daring 70-km rescue saves two critically ill patients in mud-stricken Komi
Rescuers in the Komi region carried out an emergency evacuation of two critically ill patients over the weekend. Heavy spring thaws had turned local roads into mud, forcing medics to request an escort for safe passage. The operation involved a 70-kilometre round trip to remote villages under difficult conditions.
On Saturday evening, paramedics in Troitsko-Pechorsk contacted the SPAS-KOMI rescue unit for help. A medical team was heading to Timushbor and Rusanovo to treat patients in urgent need of care. With roads made nearly impassable by melting snow and rain, the medics could not proceed alone.
The rescue team set out in a UAZ Farmer off-road vehicle, while paramedics used a bukhanka van to transport the patients. Together, they reached the villages and stabilised a man and a woman requiring immediate evacuation. The group then travelled back to the district centre, covering another 70 kilometres through treacherous terrain. By late that night, both patients had been safely delivered for further treatment. The rescuers completed their mission and returned to base, though exact numbers of other critically ill individuals in the area remain unclear.
The operation ensured two patients received timely medical attention despite harsh weather conditions. Local rescue and medical teams worked together to overcome muddy, flooded roads. Authorities have not released details on whether additional evacuations took place during the same period.
