Soccer coach Pal Dardai's Unconventional Christmas Break: Berlin, Berlin, and More Berlin
Hertha BSC's Pal Dardai has an unusual plan for the festive season. Instead of the usual holiday escapades, he's opting for a mix of German and Hungarian traditions, punctuated by some good old-fashioned grinding. After a hearty meal on Christmas Eve in Berlin, Dardai intends to visit Hungary. The reason? Well, it's time to pay homage to that staple of European traditions—pig slaughter.
But fear not, animal rights activists. This isn't your typical backyard affair. The pigs, already dispatched by European standards, simply need a couple of tweaks to become sausage fodder. "Guys, it's already cut in half," Dardai explains. Authentic family tradition at its finest!
However, not everyone in the Dardai clan gets to partake in this festive rite. Sons Palko and Bence, who also work for Hertha BSC, are injured. In true family spirit, they'll be heading to Berlin to continue their rehabilitation. Their younger brother, Marton, will also be busy with Zecke Neuendorf, Hertha BSC's Head of Licensing, and the club's physiotherapists.
The brothers miss out on Dardai's traditional winter tournament in his native Hungary, a gala event named after his late father. The tournament, now in its several-years-running, is a lively affair. Eight teams compete, and everyone gets their fill of food, drink, and dancing until the wee hours of the night. Post-event, it's time for a much-needed rejuvenation at the spa, followed by a satisfying return home.
Despite the close proximity of the tournament to the upcoming Hertha BSC training resumption on January 3rd, Dardai remains unperturbed. A ripped muscle fiber, Dardai assures, has more than enough time to heal before the BSC takes the pitch once more.
