The Danish Refugee Appeals Board, responsible for handling cases from individuals seeking asylum in Denmark, has announced an extension of its decision to postpone cases related to those from Syria. Previously implemented in December, this move comes after the fall of the Assad regime.
What's changing?
On January 16th, the Refugee Appeals Board confirmed that they will hold off on processing cases related to Syrians, following close scrutiny of the events unfolding in Syria. Furthermore, deadlines for Syrian nationals to leave Denmark after receiving a rejection on their asylum appeal have likewise been suspended.
The Board has highlighted their intent to carefully monitor developments in Syria and reassess the situation at a coordinating committee meeting scheduled for March 20, 2025.

Beyond ruling on asylum appeals, the Refugee Appeals Board also assesses the safety conditions in countries such as Syria. According to Statistics Denmark, approximately 45,000 Syrians, along with their children born in Denmark, currently reside in Denmark, with around 35,000 not holding Danish citizenship.
2015-2016 saw the arrival of around 55% of all Syrians in Denmark, a significant proportion that coincided with some of the deadliest years of the Syrian civil war.
