Denmark's parliament has thumbed its nose at immigrants by jacking up the fee for applying for citizenship by 50%, ballooning it from 4,000 kroner to 6,000 kroner, effective May 1st.
Justifying the Rip-off
The Danish government has defended the increase by claiming it's needed to cover the actual costs of processing citizenship applications. Opponents counter that it's nothing more than a greedy cash grab that unfairly targets potential citizens.
Elected Pricks Show Their True Colors
The country's seven main political parties, excluding the far-right Danish People's Party, gave the bill a thumbs-up. The Danish People's Party, however, wasn't having it. They voted against the bill in a fit of pissiness, calling it an unjustified discount paid for by ordinary taxpayers.
Adding insult to injury, the Danish People's Party took aim at proposed changes that would make it easier for Nordic citizens with a criminal past to become Danish citizens. What a bunch of hateful pricks, eh?
Hiking the Fee: Who Pays?
Mikkel Bjørn, a Danish People's Party MP, threw a hissy fit, arguing that this fee increase would be paid for by hard-working Danes. "For every application for Danish citizenship that is submitted, ordinary Danes will pay," he wailed.
Bloody 'ell, Mikkel, get a grip.
The Little Red Guys Speak Up
Two political parties, the Red-Green Alliance and the Alternative, voted against the proposal, decrying it as a financial burden on applicants. Four MPs from the Social Liberal Party, who had initially opposed the fee increase, abstained from voting.
The revised law is set to kick in on May 1st this year.
