News alarms broke out after at least 23 Danish citizens had their citizenship unlawfully revoked due to an erroneous legal understanding by authorities, according to Danish newspaper Politiken.

The disturbing revelation surfaced following Denmark's Højesteret supreme court's decision to overturn a reinterpretation of citizenship laws last June, offered by the Ministry of Immigration and Integration.

A defining instance was that of a woman, granted Danish citizenship at the age of nine in 2005. Although her father, a Danish citizen born in Vietnam, and her French mother were responsible for her Danish citizenship, the woman faced her citizenship being revoked in 2021 due to a new legal interpretation. This twist of events occurred despite the woman having spent most of her life as a Danish citizen.

The Interior Ministry, responsible for Denmark's personal identification [CPR] register, justified its decision by stating that the woman's father had not been a Danish citizen at the time of her birth. However, the supreme court's ruling declared that this interpretation was incorrect, leading to the reinstatement of her citizenship.

Revealingly, the same unjust treatment has transpired at least 22 times more, as suggested by Politiken. The actual number might exceed the reported figure since additional instances remain unaccounted for.

In a memo to parliament's citizenship committee, Immigration and Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek conceded the possibility of further unlawful denials of proof of Danish citizenship.

Politiken's report adds fuel to existing concerns regarding the treatment of foreign nationals in Denmark. Recent policies enforced by the government have far-reaching implications for migrants' rights, with a marked trend towards restrictive measures:

  1. Longer Residency Waits: The number of permanent residency permits has decreased significantly, with migrants and refugees increasingly living under temporary yearly residency schemes[1].
  2. Family Reunification Delays: Syrian refugees and others face a prolonged 3-year waiting period for family reunification, awaiting review by the European Court of Human Rights[1].
  3. Removal of Protections: Somali refugees could face removal after just 4 years as new practices are being enforced, with five initial cases potentially hinting at broader enforcement[1].
  4. Young Refugees Awaiting Family Reunification: Over 450 unaccompanied minors experience lengthy waiting times for family reunification, undermining their rights[1].

The Danish government's recent proposal of 44 new restrictions serves to aggravate these uncertainties for refugees and migrants[1].
