Dancer: Ana de Armas navigates between flamethrowers and arabesques
A Chilling Dive into Ballerina's Blood-Pumping Action
In a thrilling turn of events, actress Ana de Armas dives headfirst into the enigmatic universe of John Wick as the lead in "Ballerina." Shedding light on her fierce transformation, we delve into the grit, sweat, and adrenaline-pumping journey that accompanied her preparation for the role.
With an animated sparkle in her eyes, Ana de Armas reveals, "From the moment I laid my eyes on the script, I could envision the movie in my mind, along with its full untapped potential."
Directed by Len Wiseman, the film unfolds the compelling tale of Eve Macarro, played by de Armas, who, following rigorous ballet-meets-kung-fu training, embarks on a vengeful quest to avenge her father's murder that occurred in her childhood days. In this intricate crossover, her path intertwines with that of John Wick, John Reeves' iconic character.
"Ballerina" is masterfully set between the third and fourth installments of the John Wick saga, yet it skillfully stands on its own for audience enjoyment. While fans of the series will undoubtedly spot Easter eggs and references, the story remains self-contained and engaging for all. The cohesion of the "John Wick universe" is assured by writer Shay Hatten, who co-penned the third and fourth films.
"This universe expansion feels incredibly organic," Ana declares. "Every piece seemed to fall perfectly into place - the time, the location, and my captivating character, Eve, who led me to this project."
Additionally, the chance to collaborate with the esteemed Keanu Reeves, a beloved figure in both the film world and popular culture, served as the icing on the cake for de Armas.
"Keanu never shakes things up by dominating the scene or overstepping his bounds," Ana shares with a grateful smile. "John Wick may be a significant part of him, but he takes a step back to give you the space needed to excel, whether it's for your character development or choreographing an action sequence. Then, he reenters the scene, fully present and supportive."
Fighting for Emotional Authenticity
While the film is steeped in heart-pounding action, Ana believes the emotional journey of Eve is its most critical component.
"I found the emotional arc of Eve in the script to be the most fascinating aspect, and it ultimately inspired me to join the project," she confides.
To ensure that Eve's emotional journey resonates on screen, Ana dedicated herself to understanding the role inside and out. With a wink and a knowing smile, she explains, "It all started with three, almost four months of rigorous training at the gym, where I built up my muscle mass. The fun didn't stop there, though; I also teamed up with the stunt crew in their studio for hours on end, perfecting every fight sequence."
In addition to acquiring her fight skillsets, Ana underwent extensive weapons training to familiarize herself with the numerous firearms Eve uses throughout the film.
"It wasn't merely about understanding how these weapons functioned but also becoming comfortable using them fluently," Ana reveals, "so that Eve's movements and mine would feel entirely natural."
Embracing Pain to Find Power
During her extensive preparation, Ana discovered unexpected strengths within herself that facilitated her understanding of Eve and gave her an unparalleled level of control over her body.
"All this arduous work not only helped me grasp Eve better and solidify her character but also allowed me to develop a heightened awareness of my body's limits and potential," she says earnestly. "I learned that I could endure more pain and suffering than I'd ever thought possible. It's a sense of discipline I'd never experienced before. Overcoming obstacles, tolerating discomfort, and feeling empowered - it's a powerful, revitalizing sensation."
"Ballerina" hits theaters on June 6.
